"Due to the singular focus in the Western world upon asana practice, it is difficult to access the deeper dimensions of yoga, particularly in any authentic way. Some yoga schools teach the philosophical background of Patanjalian yoga, but usually only if you train as an instructor, and even then, it can be hit and miss depending on the background of the course organizer. Then again, some schools become fixated upon the identity of the teacher so the students inevitably develop unhealthy ego fascinations. At its root, yoga is a profound, unfathomably deep multi-pronged spiritual practice aimed at purifying the body/mind from its karmic and life-based accumulations so that the overall human system can attain to higher states of consciousness through sustained meditation practice. The eventual goal is nothing less than total apprehension of oneself and the universe as rooted in and growing out of perfect divinity. The many complex yogic and tantric pathways to these types of practices can be confusing and the fact that these pathways are never even hinted at in most yoga schools can be frustrating.
I always knew that yoga had this deeper dimension but it was not until I started studying at Open Space Yoga that the teachings became available to me in a clear, systematic, comprehensive, and highly compassionate way. Working with Mary Bastien on a one-to-one basis in the available yoga mentorship program has provided further and deeper inroads to my ongoing study and practice that are very precious and rare. At Open Space, all of the dimensions of yoga are taught, for it is my sense that we are not really doing yoga if all we are doing is asana. I am continually exposed to a diverse array of books, readings, and scriptures which have helped me deepen my understanding and I have started to learn the secrets of mantra science and the profundity of sound magic, its relationship with consciousness, and its fundamental role in the practice of yoga. Again, despite “doing yoga” for many years, I never learned a single mantra until I started studying at Open Space Yoga.
I would confidently say that if a student seeks to enter into a deep and sustained study of yoga and tantra, there is no better school than Open Space Yoga. Not least of all because they also have a tremendous amount of integrity and do not use the teachings as a means for economic exploitation, making their courses and offerings available to all through very reasonable rates. At a time when genuine teachings are so hard to find, I cannot recommend this school enough for those seeking authentic engagement with real yoga." ~Gelareh Khoie, PhD
"Mary's approach to yoga is a wholesome, well informed, and rounded course, no matter the reason why you become involved with yoga, Mari will suddenly inspire you to want to learn more about the philosophy and full teachings of this ancient practice, she suggests and points you to the right resources so that you may discover for yourself the fullness that is Yoga. My experience with the personal mentorship: Mary’s ability to help illuminate the personal path of yoga has been transformative in my life, transcending my understanding of the teachings as a full embodied mindset, the
program is excellent at helping us maintain ourselves centered and living from such (divine) mindset." ~ Concepcion Saucedo
