The active volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii are KÄ«lauea and Mauna Loa.
KÄ«lauea is the youngest and most active volcano in Hawai'i and one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It has shaped the southeast side of the island over the last 1,000 years. Its possible Kilauea will be erupting when we are there, but you never know when she will go dormant again. It is completely safe where we will be staying as the lava flows downward towards the ocean.
Mauna Kea and Kilauea are volcanoes on Hawaii where you can go stargazing. Stargazing at Mauna Kea's summit is considered one of the world's most iconic stargazing experiences. You can also stargaze at the base of Mauna Kea. You can take a stargazing tour to the summit of Mauna Kea. (not included in cost, contact Shubha for information)
The world's largest astronomical observatory is located at the summit of Mauna Kea.
Access to the summit requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle and experience navigating steep terrain.
Stargazing from Mauna Kea is exclusive to the Big Island due to its remote location and elevation. Mauna Kea is taller than Mount Everest when measured from base to summit.
We will enjoy stargazing one evening from near where we are staying, but for those who want to go to the Mauna Kea Summit, you will need to book a tour, approx $295. (you can research online)
