YOGA STYLES

ANUSARA INSPIRED Anusara Yoga® is a powerful method of hatha yoga which integrates biomechanics principles of alignment with the celebration of the heart and spirit. Developed by John Friend in 1996, Anusara Yoga® offers a dynamic synthesis of asana technique, yoga philosophy, and the celebration of good company.

ASHTANGA  Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic method of yoga derived from the teachings of K. Pattabhi Jois and his teacher Sri T. Krishnamacharya.   The Ashtanga yoga method is based on a specialized set sequence of postures, where each movement is linked by one breath.  The Primary Series also known as Yoga Chikitsa, which means yoga therapy; is intended to detoxify and align the body, increase flexibility, develop strength and build stamina.  Pattabhi Jois was known to say that "yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory" thereby signifying that the highest form of knowledge for the yoga practitioner can only be experienced directly through a disciplined consistent practice.

IYENGAR   Iyengar Yoga is based on the discoveries of Yogacharya Sri BKS Iyengar, from his 80 years of uninterrupted practice. In the Iyengar method, study is orderly and progressive. We start with the external, gross physical body and move towards the subtle, more inner layers of our being. The key characteristics of Iyengar Yoga are: Accessibility (regardless of age, flexibility, ability); Timing (longer holds of poses to go deep and penetrate each and every cell of the body); Sequencing (varies tremendously depending upon the goal of practice, season, time of day, individual); Exquisite attention to detail; Alignment (alignment of muscles, bones and joints which creates safety and stability in practice); and a Tremendous focus on Svādhyāya (self-study and awareness building). Iyengar Yoga is often referred to as “meditation in action” – where movements are infused with awareness and intelligence. Our entire being is focused fully and absorbed in those actions, so that no part of our embodiment is left neglected or undiscovered.

RESTORATIVE  The art of relaxation.  Because of the hectic activity of our daily lives, we are often in our sympathetic "fight or flight" nervous systems.  Restorative yoga, with its emphasis on calming, relaxing, and renewing the body and mind, shifts us into our parasympathetic "rest and digest" nervous systems instead, allowing the body to re-balance.  Using props to support the body in reclined poses, we focus on long holds that open the body and deepen the breath.  A must for all yogis!

VINYASA
FLOW Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic practice linking breath to movement. Vinyasa means "breath-synchronized movement", Incorporating bandhas, dristi, and vinyasa krama, or logical progression of poses. Vinyasa flow is a challenging and invigorating practice which develops strength, stamina and flexibility. Vinyasa Flow will be a more challenging class with unique sequences. RELAX DEEPLY/YOGA NIDRA  The art of relaxation. Because of the hectic activity of our daily lives, we are often in our sympathetic "fight or flight" nervous systems. Restorative yoga, with its emphasis on calming, relaxing, and renewing the body and mind, shifts us into our parasympathetic "rest and digest" nervous systems instead, allowing the body to rebalance. Using props to support the body in reclined poses, we focus on long, soothing holds that open the body and deepen the breath. Combined with yoga nidra, a guided meditation practice in savasana, the class will leave you with a sense of profound rest. A must for all yogis!

YIN

Yin yoga involves longer holds of gentle stretches, usually supported by various props like bolsters and blankets. Poses are often supine hip and shoulder openers, but can include seated, kneeling and some standing poses. Some gentle movement with breath is used to release stagnant energy. Yin poses are usually held for about 3-5 minutes, allowing the nervous and muscular systems to decompress and relax deeply and completely. Pranayama (breath techniques), visualization and meditation techniques are used to bring the body and mind into a relaxed, meditative state. Similar to restorative yoga, this practice is intended to bring the students into the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). However, the poses aren't held quite as long as in restorative, giving more time to stretch a wide range of areas of the body. Excellent for promoting and sustaining long-term flexibility, Yin yoga is the more lunar style to Vinyasa or Power yoga's Yang (solar) - the counterbalance to a busy daily life. Come to Yin to relax!class is for anyone new to yoga, or with a continuing yoga practice looking for more refinement in the poses. Students learn correct alignment and breathing in the yoga postures. This class is suitable for ALL levels, No experience required.  (the most basic of all our classes)
