Pattabhi Jois, of Mysore, South India, Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient and unique system composed of a precisely designed sequence of postures synchronized with smooth, deep breathing (Ujjayi), gaze (dristi), and energy locks (bandhas). The main focus of Ashtanga yoga is vinyasa, or linking breath and movement to create a dynamic sequence of asanas (postures). The practice is composed of three main elements, pranayama (breathing), bandhas (internal locks), and dristi (gaze points). These elements combine to create internal heat in the body, purging toxins, and focusing the mind.
