Ayur means "life" & Veda "knowledge" Ayurveda emerged from the spiritual texts of India called the Vedas, or Books of Wisdom. Ayurveda teaches us how to live in harmony with nature and how to recognize the power of self-healing from within. Health is looked at as not just physical health but emotional, spiritual, mental, social and universal.
The Five Basics Elements in Nature also exist in our own bodies, Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Ether (Space) and the Doshas derive from these Five Elements. The Doshas are biological energies found throughout the human body and mind. The doshas manifest through actions and qualities like personality traits, biological functions, body types and more. Your dosha derives from the time of conception which is called your Prakruti or constitution. Here the amount of Vata, Pitta & Kapha a person has is determined. We have all three doshas in our constitution but someone may be born with more Ether & Air so more of the Vata dosha is in their Prakruti. This person may have a quick and active mind, fast moving, likes dry foods and may have constipation. Where someone with more Fire or Pitta dosha in their Prakruti will tend to be intense, hard working, can anger easily and often hungry. A Kapha type person is mainly made up of Water & Earth will have the tendency to be gentle, introverted, grounded and enjoys sweets.
While one Dosha may have the most influence there is usually a second dosha that also has a strong effect, this is called Dual-Dosha.
The Goal in Ayurveda is to get as close to our Prakruti as we can. The doshas are dynamic and change with what we take in through our 5 senses. When we take in what causes imbalance or aggravation to our unique constitution dis-ease will eventually happen. Vikruti is used to describe this stray from your Prakruti. Example, if a Pitta dosha perdominant person works intensly through the night, they may expereince short temper the next day. If a Vata perdomnant person varies their eating too much, eating one day and not so much the next, they may expereince constapation from the lack of routine. If a Kapha predominant person becomes too lethargic they may experience weight gain.

Ayurveda and Yoga, both are very ancient healing systems that originated in India. Both have roots in Vedic philosophy and help to achieve a wholesome happy life. Yoga is a union of the lower self with the higher self. The goals of Yoga and Ayurveda are the same; Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. Dharma means righteous duty. Artha means monetary success. Kama means fulfillment of positive desire and Moksha means enlightenment, realization, self realization.
In order to achieve all four pillars of light, a person must have a healthy body, mind, prana, and consciousness. These can be achieved by combining Ayurveda and Yoga. Ayurveda and Yoga are concurrent and inherent healing systems. Yoga heals through Asana, Pranayama & Meditation Ayurveda heals through panchakarma (detox program), rejuvenation, herbs, and proper diet and lifestyle regimen. That is why a Yogi who doesn’t know Ayurveda, he is a half Yogi and Ayurvedic physician who doesn’t know yoga, he’s a half physician.
